In rock, at least, people who listen to modern rock or metal know about Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin... the old stuff. There is a very definite history in rock. But in hip hop the people who like it today don't know about what was going on ten years ago, or even twenty years ago. I wonder why that is. And you can throw your two cents in and say that YOU know YOUR history, but admit at least that most kids don't. They might know Dr. Dre, but that's it. and he's a poseur

I think it's because a lot of people that listen to rap are kids/teens/young adults, and eventually they switch to another genre of music. They don't listen to it long enough to know or want to know the history. Their parents might have listened to it when they were young but when the kids start listening to it they don't want to hear about the "old" stuff. They don't think it's cool. I tried to tell my son about Run DMC. He could care less. He doesn't like the way it sounds.

I think that so many people don't know much about the root of Hip-Hop music because there were so many factors that contributed to one beginning. What I mean by that is, there were so many different things going on at one time, that it is sometimes hard to pin-point a single root of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop music did start in 1970s Bronx, New York City. One of the roots of Hip-Hop music was how African-Americans wanted their own type of music, of which, would be their own dignifying 'cultural' music (they wanted something to make their own). Another root of Hip-Hop is how it was a very cheap type of music to make, in terms of money. The equipment needed to produce Hip-Hop music was very inexpensive, so it was a widely attainable production. The list of roots literally goes on forever, which makes Hip-Hop both interesting and confusing. One of the first group of artists were "The Last Poets." Another original Hip-Hop group was "The Sugarhill Gang."

I hope this helps!
