Why is the Western World swinging right during a recession?

Although economic collapses have typically lead to left-wing surges this one has been different. In the US Republicans have surged in the polls especially on key issues like economy and healthcare, in Canada Conservatives now approach majority territory. British Tories are on a roll, and during the EU elections the People's Party dominated in every major country except Sweden and Greece.

Why has this recession defied tradition in such a way ?

The whole Western World is swinging CENTRIST - Obama is no left winger by any real standard. And Europe has been SO communist/socialist for so long people are getting sick of it there.
This is a natural political progression.

Further, why is there a recession as the Western World has been swinging right? This isn't something new, this "top-down" trend has been going on since the 80's in the US.

To me it seems that over the past 20-30 years, the propaganda coming from the right in the US, as well as in some other country's, has become very good at pointing the finger and directing attention away from the folks who are profitting the most off of us, and pointing the finger elsewhere. Besides, I would hardly call this type of thing as "opposed to tradition" either... it's gone both ways through history... the rise of the Nazi's during the 20's and 30's, was the German right-wing party misdirecting people during hard times, pointing the finger at Jews, Gypsies, Liberals, Actors, Artists, etc... and using their economic crisis, to sweep into power.

On the other hand, in the US during the 30's, we suffered through 3 consecutive right-wing presidents, which led directly to the Great Depression (In the US aka, the 1st Repub Great Depression). This did see a leftward swing in this country, but the right was still hitting with everything they had, and trying to keep the money headed upwards.
I think what we've seen today, at least in the US, is that the right have become the party of corporate America, and theu now have a tremedous amount of money to us, and are now much better with the marketing of their propaganda... and they now have a lot of tools for their misinformation at their disposal.

Perception. Are you a have or have not? It's a matter of opinion. If you believe that you are a have, you want to protect your monetary stake. If you believe you are a have not then people become more liberal. More people see themselves as haves this time around.

The Conservatives in Canada have been close to a majority for years now. This is nothing new. They also introduced a stimulus package, and I'll bet you a million dollars Conservatives in other countries favor stimulus packages because they are not far-right like the Republican party is, they are quite moderate in comparison.

Because corporations have more money and know how than individuals. What you are in fact cheering is world wide corporatism.

because the libs in congress were posing as republicans for years......the dems have been in control for the last 2 years of the collapse......

Because, eventually, after several experiences, people come to understand that lower taxes and less government mean more prosperity.

Don't worry, once we become prosperous again, a new, younger generation will come along and swear up and down that they have a better idea and that communism/socialism 'has some good things' and we'll go through this pathetic exercise all over again.

This is my fourth trip. I must say this one is the scariest.

Don't know about tradition, but if the liberal response to recession is to take ever-growing slices of MY money, I'm going to support conservatives to take back the economy.
