why is the walking dead so short?

wow this is truly disappointing. the show has been great so far but the season is ending after only 6 episodes??? why is this? the show is finally starting to develop and now they are going on a 10 month break. why would they make the season so short and then give such a long break? ill probably forget about the show come october
