says on the box? For 8gb = its 7.88gb for 512mb its 490mb and floppies its 1.32mb instead of 1.44 what gives and how can I redeem that space back?

Same arguement of why you don't get full hard drive space on the box.

They use the standard prefix for giga, which means 1000.
A true gigabyte is 1024 megabytes.

This leads a true gigabyte to be inherently larger than a decimal based gigabyte, of which you lose usable space.
