Why is the range of wireless routers so large?

Why is it that some wireless routers are as little as $25, while some are as expensive as $150? What advantages do more expensive routers have?

Better hardware specifications.
My router cost $100 (Asus RT-N16), however it has a 480 Mhz CPU, 32 MB of flash, 128 MB of RAM, and can run DD-WRT flawlessly. El cheapo Belkins will have 2MB of flash and 2-4 MB of RAM, and crash constantly.
