It hasn't always been that way. The press was merely part of the audience during the Lincoln/Douglas debates. Now the press asks the questions. So they're allowed to set the agenda for the debates.
Woudln't it be better to put the candidates on stage alone. And let them have at it without anyone informing them of what the questions are going to be ahead of time?
Wouldn't that make for a much more lively and revealing discussion?
