Why is the Oil Pressure Gage on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee acting funky?

The check gages light will come on and the gage reads all the way to the L. The pointer thingy goes all the way to the L then after about 20 seconds will return to a mid-high range read. It happens about once a drive. Nothing specific seems to trigger it. No noise or anything is accompanied by this. It is just showing that the pressure is dropping all the way down then returning to normal status.

Confused..?

As a mechanic for many years I need to ask you some questions. 1) have you made sure the oil is at the proper fill mark. 2) when is the last time your oil was changed. Sludge in the oil could cause the pressure sending unit to give a false reading..
It could be a malfunctioning pressure sending unit. It could be a bad pressure gauge. I would try changing the oil and see if the problem goes away. If that doesn't work then Re-post the question with some of my questions answered. I sure hope the oil change works for you. You would be amazed the damage bad oil will do. Good luck
Another thing it could be is a bad oil pump. Not to likely on a Jeep Cherokee. Change oil and let me know.
