Why is the media so obessed with looks?

Whether it's tv series or movies everyone has to look like Brad Pitt or Jessica Biel and have the perfect body that's not reality becuase most people don't look like a celebrity. Why can't the media just pick people for their acting ability and not their looks
 
Sadly - most people want to look at someone beautiful/ handsome - not some ordinary person.

However Opera seems to choose people on talent and not on looks thats something - right.
