Why is the mainstream media using the term "climate change" and no longer using...

It's political; the right in general does not want to admit that earth is getting warmer, and especially denies that human activity might be responsible, because those imply controls that might cut into profits.
The euphemism started under the Bush administration.

Global warming was proven false as we are in a cooling period heading for the next ice age. Algore and his ilk are making a fortune out of "global warming' so they changed the song to "climate change". Man has very little impact on either. Mother Nature is in charge. It actually gives the socialist government more control over your life and there is the reason Obama is involved.
Global warming and climate change are two different things, always have been.
GW is the progressive heating up of the Earth's atmosphere, CC is the effect that this has. One is cause the other is effect.
Historically the media tended to use the term GW when they should have been using CC instead, something they have corrected.

Global warming has not been shown to be false (The ocean temperatures this year are the highest in recorded history). While global warming is an accurate term, climate change more fully describes what is happening. More rainfall in some regions, less in others. Some regions are warming more than others, and some areas may get cooler
For one, the IPCC always used the term "climate change" from when it was first created in 1998, so the term is not new. Then the Bush administration purposely decided to start using the term "climate change" following the recommendation of conservative spin guru Frank Luntz. That now well-know memo is linked here.

You still see both terms used. I suppose that climate change continues to get more popular as the understanding of climate gets more complex

Well Global warming ended after 1998 when the sun began to decline and it became global cooling 3 years ago when the sun suddenly and unexpectedly went into an extreme extended solar minimum that real scientists nor liberals are still evaluating. But so fat the real scientists have reached 3 potential possibilities from the suns sudden shut down.
First and the small majority of about 40% feel we are headed to a Dalton minimum condition like occurred from 1790 through about 1825 when they held easter parties on the frozen Thames in London.
Next are a more minor group who contemplate a more serious solar minimum similar or maybe a little colder than the Maunder Minimum from 1640 through 1720 which was the coldest part of the little ice age.
The third possibility is expressed by the oldest and most experienced solar and environmental scientists that are pointing out this current interglacial has lasted almost 13,000 years overall and that is the average length that any interglacial period has lasted and their recommendation is to make all preparations for the world to move into a full ice age like the one we came out of 13,000 years ago.
So you can either study up on just how cold it gets in a full ice age and where living is good to move to or you can play silly liberal and freeze starting in 15 to 20 years when it could start getting really cold for a long time.
