Because of its lasting repurcussions on the remaining people who lived through it. To this day, my mother, who was born in 1935, buys groceries whether she needs them or not. Three refrigerators, two freezers, countless cabinets, ALL filled with food. Not because she is poor, nor because she grew up poor. Her family was fortunate. So fortunate that they moved less fortunate family members into their house and BUILT A WALL DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR HOUSE so that the family members who were welcomed into their home would not feel like they were intruding. So that they could maintain their dignity in a time when without their family they would have been homeless, a situation so many other families found themselves in if they didn't have families to help them. People came together to help one another in a time of horrible economic strain.
Think about it....if MY Mother, whose father and grandfather were among the well-off people is affected by the spectre of people doing without when she WASN'T one of them TO THIS DAY, then it must have been horrible. Think of it like a hurricane without any rain or wind or flooding. People were without basic necessities and there were no Coast Guard Helicopters to help them out.
The end. That must have been what it seemed like

Well that is very funny to ask? Great Depression says it all? Very important don't you think? People jumped off of sky scrapers after losing millions in the stock market for one? Yes the stock market fell, crashed and burned? No paper was worth what it was written on? No food, no shelter, no hospitalization, no welfare, people were literally by the millions homeless! Government was taking all their land for taxes? That was a criminal tactic as well? Then FDR created the welfare program? Money played still but everyone had allotments for food, like essentials, Milk for their kids but there were no diapers? ha ha Churches,Synogogues stayed open to people 24/7 for shelter and food? But then the land grabbers made history through development, and this was the stimulus package then? Peon labor in the fields to harvest food to ship overseas? DUH? All that money the government was getting was not being used to put back to the people either? Some with the new welfare program but very little! Donations were made by many Rich people to help the communities, some were very good and others did it so they could keep safer from the criminal elements. More Prisons were built galore, political stradegy to eliminate the poor? Alcatraz, San Quentin,etc? This was the way of our government? People were put in jail for years for stealing a loaf of bread. And were brutally beaten and many times killed in the process! This is why the government today is trying to get people mortgages now and helping them with Food stamps and other ways for we are no longer zombies and we will not stand for that again! Politicians got paid regardless and we suffer?
