My Dodge truck had the same problem. It was caused by a loose plug in the wire harness going to the compressor. Sometimes it had a good connection, other times it didn't make contact. I cut the plug off and connected it with wire nuts. No problems for the last 4 years. I can't diagnose your Jeep across the internet but I would look at electrical connections first.
