Why is tennis considered a gay / sissy sport?

I like tennis. It wasn't a sport I grew up with (I play(ed) the main 3), but it was a game I grew to like and I like the challenge of conquering a new sport. Problem is, most people around me think it's a gay sport so there isn't much competition. Any ideas on how to change that perception?
 
Everyone that sucks at it is like,"dude, this sport is gay"

They can't handle it
