Why is T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile so CHEAP?

So I am getting a new phone because I am moving to the US. I really want Verizon because all my friends do but my parents want me to get T-Mobile or Virgin Mobile because they are so cheap.

Why are they so cheap compared to Verizon?
