Why is sports competition taken so seriously these days?

From parents fighting over calls at little league soccer and baseball games to NBA fans biting their nails and covering their eyes when their home team trails in the fourth quarter, I sometimes wonder why people get so worked up over a game when that is supposed to be an escape from daily stresses. In little league it is about the kids having fun, but some parents (not all) go at each other's throats because they feel the kid is treated unfairly or just want their team to win. At NBA games, the home team will boo the visitng team and boo any calls they feel the ref made against their home team. Then if the team wins, they are happy. If the team loses, they are sad and disappointed. I just wonder why people take this stuff so seriously like it is war or something (like how some people use the Olympics as an excuse to hate people from other nations a.k.a. my country must win gold to be the best while everyone else sucks). I guess it has to do with current times and just how stressful life can be for some people that it infiltrates every part of their lives including recreational activities. That's sad!
