Why is someone who was sentenced to jail still free?

On 6/29/09- said individual was sentenced to six months in jail. However this person is still free, with another court date on 9/29/09. Someone please explain?
 
I would be more inclined to believe the person was found guilty on 6/29/09 and the court will "decree" the actual sentencing during the sentencing phase of the case on 9/29/09.
 
the plea and terms were entered into on 6.29, the actual sentencing date is 9/29. is the most likely answer. the courts are giving the person some time to get their affairs in order etc. Or another possibility is that the jail time has been deferred and another hearing in 90 days to see if the suspended sentence is still warranted.
I doubt that it had anything to do with the color of his skin, and how deep his pockets were.
 
The sentencing date and actual date to report to jail are different. Also, the subject could be out on bail while on appeal of their sentence.
