Why is some of the media trying so hard to discredit McClellan?

The harder they try the more it looks like the president said behind closed doors "we need to clean up this mess, I don't care how you do it, just do it." "Yes, sir, Mr. President, we will call the media and try to discredit him.... if that doesn't work.... we have a pair of cement shoes in the shed." "Ok, but use that as a last resort, and make it look like an accident!"
