Because it's rewarding. It's rewarding to watch your civilization develop from a small, primitive group to a full-blown super-power with a unique culture, strong military, and great achievements in science, architecture, and military conquests. Strategizing and implementing the strategies, watching the outcome, the diplomacy (creating treaties, breaking treaties, negotiating with other leaders, espionage) -- all of it is very exciting.

I have been playing this game since 1993 and it is hard ot stop when I get going... one more turn... one more turn... after I finish a Civ, I can put the game down.. but once i start a new one, it consumes me!

I just got Revolution for the 360. I feel the same way! I planned on playing for maybe an hour yesterday, and before I knew it four hours had gone by!

The volume of parameters you can control and the strong AI make it pretty awesome as a strategy game.

I don't think there is nayhting more accurate in its genre.. The graphics are not the best and to the onlooker it probably looks a bit ridiculous. But seriously the thought that has gone into the games structure and development are outstanding and I think it is good that games that draw on our imagination (instead of stimulation of the sdrenal gland with fancy gfx and gore) still exist.
