Why is sex called 'making love'? Aren't you supposed to be in love in the first place?

Sex is not called making love. Sex is just sex! If you love someone and both are having sex but showing alot of love in the process.....that is making love. Big difference.
Both can be good!

It's merely a figure of speech much the same as "practicing medicine". I'm sure you want your doctor to be more than practicing when he / she examines you. LOL The English language has many instances where words or terms are used in odd ways. Making love is just one of those weird phrases.
