Why is profanity used in the military?

There probably is more profanity in the military than just about anywhere else. However if he is writing letters laced with the F word, he is an idiot.

My brother is currently in boot camp and he sends home letters filled with the F word. He even sends our grandma letters filled with the F word too. I thought that being in the military meant that you were suppose to be respectful to civilians. So why does my brother say his drill sargent told him that profanity is okay, even to your grandma?

It is to get the F***ing point across.

I'm sure your brother learned those words and used them well before joining the military. I'm sure his drill sergeant told him no such thing.

When I went to Army basic training I said *F* at least twice in every sentence for me it is a good stress reliever. However, I never wrote it in letters especially to my grandma.

I am going to be a total bitchh here....but your brother sounds like an idiot. There is no reason other than blatant disrespect and immaturity for your brother to use the F word to his grandmother.

A drill sgt wont tell you that.... But profanity in the military is a feeling nothing else. i did the same thing when i was there but it gos away when bootcamp is over i dont use profanity like i did in bootcamp and he respect yall its just the stress..

Making no excuses, I can tell you that as you become more tired and fatigued, your verbal skills go down the drain quickly. Curse words are viewed simply as nice fillers. Eventually, if he stays in long enough, he will be assigned to a unit that will not tolerate such non-sense and he will learn what projection of professionalism is all about. Until then, he will be a direct reflection of the company he keeps.

Your brother is lying. Drill Sergeants are not supposed to use profanity on or around recruits. Sarcasm is a much better tool.

Soldiers swear because they are groups of young men and women doing a tough job. Bitching comes with the territory.

We use profanity because it is our god given right to. He probably should not have written letters to your grandma using profanity. I also doubt that his DI told him too either. It sounds like he is just trying to sound like a "bad A$$."

Your brother should know better than to use profanity when speaking with your grandmother, despite what a drill sergeant might have said. I think perhaps he took his drill sergeant's words out of context. It's not the military's fault that your brother doesn't have enough class to speak to your grandmother with respect.

If your brother is actually taking time to write out the 'F' word in letters to family members, I think it has more to do with him being a moron than anything to do with the military.
