Why is my yamaha motorcycle hard to start after sitting for a while?

are you using choke on it when you start it, i know someone who didnt now they had a choke and it wouldn't start unless they bump/push started it. but when they found out they had a choke, it started easier.

and only getting 35? thats bad, are you sure its not restricted?
maybe your loosing compression, is it easy to move the kick start or is it hard, if its easy then you have low compression.

I just got a 1974 yamaha dt 175 enduro and it has a hard time starting. It will start when I push start it. After it has been ridden for a while it starts up on the first kick. Also, when riding it it feels like there's some power missing. I've read that this bike's top speed is about 70 mph. But i can hardly get it over 35. I've looked through the motor a little bit, the reeds look fine, and the carburetor looks pretty clean. any ideas?!
I do put the choke on when i try to start it

If its been sitting, you most likely need to clean the carb. It sounds like the typical gummed up jets scenario. Give it a tune up, plug, oil, check the compression, and NEW GAS. Pull the carb, clean all your jets, spray the body and make sure the circuts are clean. see if that works.
