why is my Windows Media Player not playing DVD's?

whet i put in a DVD and try to play it with Windows Media Player it come's up with a message "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."
what is the problem what do i need to do or download on my computer?
I have an Emachines computer running Windows xp
