i unhooked my amp the other day and when i hooked it back up it wasn't putting out as much as it used to so i turned up the gain and it barely got louder. after about a minute the amp started getting hot and the protection light came on. when i turn it on the green light is on for a second and the speakers make a thud sound but then the protect light comes back on and stays on.

Sounds like its blown. First off, the gain is NOT A VOLUME KNOB.

Unhook the RCA's, speaker wires, and see what happens when you turn the car on. Also, double check all your wiring, to make sure nothing is shorted, but it sounds like the amp just gave up the ghost.
