why is my mazda 2001 jerky when I accelerate and stalls at stops?

My Mazda Millenia has been jerky when I start the car in the morning. I would warm it up and that seemed to help. Also when I parked the car nose in a little slanted up it would stall when I would start it. I started to back it in and that seemed to help the stalling problem. The jerkiness was usually only for a few yards and then the car would smooth out. Today after a crazy day of rain, the jerkiness seemed to happen whenever I was at low speeds are trying to go from stop. The car even stalled out a few times. I will be taking it to a mechanic on monday but would like to have an idea of what is wrong so that I don't get taken for. This seems to happen to me often. Is this something that is going to cost thousands of dollars to fix? Thanks for the help!!
Yes the ce light is on. It has actually been on since I bought the car. I've taken it in a bunch of times to get it checked out and then within weeks it is on again. The gas was also low when the the serious jerking started but I filled up it up and it is still jerking at slow speeds and stops.
I think it is a 2.5
