Why is my manual transmission 1998 Mazda 626 randomly jerking?

It also clicks when I turn and after I turn. Are these the CV boots? Do you think it would make a thousand mile journey?

Not the CV boots, the CV joints my friend. And it's probably not the transmission making the noise but you probably feel it in shifter thereby making you think its the tranny. No way would I drive it that far - get it fixed.

That jerking is the CV joints binding up. They will fail soon. First the boot gets torn, then the grease comes out, then the joint fails. The Boots should be checked at every service interval and replaced immediately. If they have leaked for a while replace the axle with a rebuilt unit. They sell for 80 to 100 bucks apiece and take one hour each of labor to install. Cheap insurance as far as I am concerned.
