Why is my internet so slow all of a sudden?

Yesterday my internet crashed and I was bored the entire day.

I went to bed early because I had nothing to do, and when I woke up my internet was on again!

I was so thrilled until I found out that my download speeds had been reduced by more then half their normal capacity. My upload has also suffered.

Here is a test from moments ago:

So I ask you...Why does god hate me?

NEWS FROM THE FRONT LINES!

My download and upload speeds have increased dramatically in the last few minutes, however they are still not as good as they have previously been.

Perhaps there is nothing to fear.

Perhaps god does not hate me.

That's typical behaviour for the Comcast network.
Your speeds will always bounce all over the place.
Retest several times over the course of a few days and that's the sort of thing you'll see.

I didn't notice this problem until now, but today my speeds have gone from 4000 to 7000 to 19000 back to 14000 and just all over the place...

Hopefully it fixes itself soon!

I've also noticed that while I am doing the speed test, my download or upload will actually decrease during the test at times.

I didn't have this problem before.

I am really disappointed.

It's not going to "fix itself", soon or ever.

Part of the disparity is just normal fluctuation due to network traffic (more users=less bandwidth) and part is due to Comcast's inane "SpeedBoost" (which they actually brag about in their ads!).

I recently took advantage of a Comcast special offer which included an upgrade to their top tier internet speed.
Following the "upgrade" I monitored the speed using a few test sites (speedtest.net, dslreports, pcpitstop) and saw absolutely no change from my previous service.

I called to complain and was told that none of those sites provide an accurate measure.
I asked how I could verify the line speed and was told there really wasn't a good way but maybe downloading some large files from a known fast server (they actually recommended nVidia) was the best real world test.
So I said that they basically just expect me to take their word- and pay extra money- that my service was now faster.
"Yes", was the response.

Sadly, fiber optic won't be hitting my area anytime soon and Comcrap is the only deal around but make no mistake...they suck bigtime.

Here are two tests I just ran- approximately 24hrs. apart...

Note that not only is the DL speed different but the ping time varies quite a bit also.

Damn.

I'm in the same boat as you, Comcast seems to be my only option right now.

I'm not happy with it, but I guess all I can do is wait for something better to come along.

I hate how they boast speedboost...sigh.

I wish you the best of luck with your internet issues!

Thank you for the detailed post.

To increase internet speed
* Check to see if faster internet connections are in your area:
Fiber optic and cable internet tend to be faster than DSL and dial-Up.
*Do some basic maintenance on your PC:
a scan disk, a virus scan, a malware scan, and clear your recycle bin.Delete old files and temporary files.
* Reset Your Modem
Sometimes switching OFF and ON your modem helps you to speed the internet.
* Optimize your cache or temporary Internet files.
These files improve your Internet connection performance by not downloading the same file over and over.
*Software to increase internet speed:
Have a review on the different software available in Techforumindia.com/index.php?topic=5223.0 and choose one that satisfies you.

After you have tried some of this, try your connection again using Scanmyspeed.com and see if it's running any faster. If you are not satisfied Call your Internet service provider (ISP) and check whether upgradation of your plan is necessary.
