Why is my dog eating cat poop?

My dog goes through phases where she likes to eat cat poop. I will find her digging in the litter box. She knows it is wrong because as soon as she hears me coming she stops (she obviously has litter stuck to her nose). Why does she do this?

Cats have shorter stomachs so they digest food faster. Since food spends less time in their stomachs they have to eat food with lots of proteins and calories, for them to have nutrition. But the poop also comes out with still lots of proteins and calories.
And dogs love proteins!!!
For lots of dogs, cat poop is almost a treat or a replacement for dog food!

Keep training her on not doing that.
Use a word command to negate access to food, or put her out. Repetition is key.

dogs are gross. and i say that lovingly cause i have 2 of them. they do it for the same reasons they eat their own, or roll in deer/rabbit poop. either there is something in it they want, or its just the smell.

yesterday i noticed my 11m/o was chewing on something and when i told him to drop it he stopped and it looked like he had swallowed it and continued to play with the other dog and his toys. a little while later he started doing it again, and again he stopped when i asked him about it. after about an hour i caught him spitting it onto the floor. it was a dead cricket and he just kept tucking it into his gums and saving it for later. gross.

I have yet to meet a dog that doesnt like "litter box treats". That's just something they do.

Put the litterbox away from his reach or clean it often
