Why is my car shaking while going down the road?

I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has a problem shaking while going down the road. I changed the front end tires thinking that this may be the problem but it has not helped. The shaking is horribly worse at higher speeds but does not go away when going slow. Just looking for suggestions on what it may be so I don't get screwed when taking it to a mechanic. Thanks.
