Own a used 2004 Mazda 3 w/ over 94000 mi on it. One morning it was dead. Jumped the battery and it started, but would idle at red lights and, every now and again, would completely shut off. Would start right back up so took in for new battery. New battery was installed but still idles and shuts off at red lights. Has not done this before. What gives?

none of us can tell you the answer man, not even the guy above me, i'd say it is alternator, but thats just a shot in the dark. Your cars only 2004 so i'm very sure thats the problem is something very simple ( battery cables? ).

first place to look would be your alternator it shouldn't be bad at under a hundred thousand but its passable most auto parts stores test them for free if you can take it off the car and bring it to them removal shouldn't be anymore than a few bolts and a belt tensioner this is easy and should only take about 10 min to remove and replace this is only relevant if your battery keeps dieing though if it is staying charged then it is clearly another problem if not then at least the alternator is probably a hundred or better but a lot cheaper than putting a car in the shop
