I have a 2001 Ford Mustang, auto trans V6. At first it shimmied/vibrated in second gear but was fine other than that. Then it started chugging like it was going to die when it was in reverse. Now it is much worse. I started it and it was chugging pretty hard. It evened out somewhat when I was driving it down the street. Then the check engine light began to blink, it acted like it was going to die at stoplights and it was chugging pretty hard the whole time. I lost some acceleration capability too.
I went up to Autozone and had them run a test to tell me why the engine light was on. The readout said
"Cylinder misfire detected-cylinder number 3.
Explanation: The powertrain control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition.
Probable causes:
1. ignition system fault-spark plug(s), ignition wires, coil
2. vacuum leak
3. injector fault
4. high or low fuel pressure"
Now I've had a similiar problem on a much smaller scale, about a year ago, and it came up with the same readout. The problem went away by itself. I have a feeling that won't be the case here.
I have kept up on all my routine maintenance, except maybe the trand fluid and filter and there's 130,000 mi on the car. All other gauges and lights read fine (except the "service engine soon" light of course).
Any siggestions would be greatly appreciated! I posted a question earlier with the same conditions, before it got so bad, and almost no one answered! PLEASE HELP!
