why is my 1992 chevy s10 having trouble shifting?

The shifter on the column has alot of play in it. the indicator on the dash shows it is in between gears, and it is hard to shift it from park to drive, but drive to reverse, reverse to drive and reverse to park shifts pretty smoothly. truck revs really high in 1st gear, sounds more like a semi when idling.. all issues gradually getting worse. is it just the column that need replacing or is my trans going? trans fluid levels are normal, and does not smell burnt, color is fine etc.. detailed info: 108k miles..4x4..anything thing else you need to know in order to help don't hesitate to post and ask thanks..

The first thing is your linkage does need to be adjusted and is an easy fix. As far as reving up and sounding so bad you may wanna try to change your filter and fluid on the trans first before replacing the trans. The high idle can be your throttle body or you need a fuel injection cleaning. A real one not the add it to the gas tank type! Good luck!
