Why is male bisexuality still taboo in American culture?

For consideration,

What made female bisexuality more acceptable?
Also, perhaps just to play the devil's advocate:

I identify as a queer male, but whenever I say that I'm attracted to a girl (rare but it does happen) my very homosexual-friendly friends seem nearly seem offended. Even my most liberal friends and bisexual girls will label me as exclusively gay simply because I date men, so the perpetrators of the taboo of male bisexuality are NOT exclusive in this manner. Though this might just be a distorted reflection of prevalent homophobia.
