Why is it wrong to judge others when they do immoral/unethical actions?

One thing that always bother me about christianity was the whole 'thou shalt not judge, lest ye be judged' in Matthew 7. When reading the entire verse of Matt. 7:15 I get the impression that it's about hypocrites judging which would make sense. But others say that it's all anyone judging someone else. Why would that be wrong?

We judge others based on their actions. If a man steals we judge him, if he rapes we judge him, if someone murders another person we judge them. We pass judgment on them as a society because they have offended our morals.

What do you think? The whole judge not lest ye be judged seems like an easy way for immoral people to not be criticized. It seems like a stupid rule. Does anyone actually follow this?
I'm atheist so I don't care about that whole 'sin' thing. Do you mean to imply that I cannot look down on a child rapist? Aren't most of us more moral than that person?

I agree, I think thats retarded. Just like the whole mixing clothing fabrics/eating shellfish is an abomination thing. Bottom line is to try your best to be a good person.

It is only wrong to judge others when you are no different to them. You can't judge a thief if you are a lier etc. If you have to judge a person, then you have to do it in love, your motives have to be right.

It is wrong to judge others because we as humans never know what is in a person's heart or the circumstances around what makes a person do the things that they do. only God knows those things

Don't confuse judging someone as the same as exposing someone else's sin. As long as you take the beam out of your eye before you tell someone that they have a speck in their's, you should tell someone that they should confess their sin.
I think many people take it too far and begin to judge and become hypocrites. Those people need to be humbled and repent as well.

Well, you can speak up when we see evil, as in a murder. Society has that right to judge those actions. It is when we judge others and yet we wink at our own sin that is wrong. You must judge yourself first before you can point out the error of another. Without the court system we would be in a mess.

Yeah. Its even used in an atheist argument and by so called christians who deceive themselves. Like one being gay and not even acknowledging its wrong. But when it is pointed out the excuse is "judge not lest ye be judged." True. But I dont judge gay people on the fact that their gay. It becomes dangerous when they're gay and they think that God doesnt have a problem with it.

No one likes to be judged when they do wrong. So Christians will throw this up when they do wrong. There is another verse that says not to judge according to appearance but judge righteously. There is also a scripture that says, if your brother trespass against you, go to him and tell him his faults. Kind of hard to do that when you have people who hide behind the don't judge card. Jesus said you shall know them by their fruit, those who love using the don't judge me card are the ones who are in the wrong and will use the card whenever they need it.
I have been a Christian for almost thirteen years and I don't use that don't judge me card at all. If I do wrong come and tell me my faults. I have no problem with it. But a lot of Christians will use it. The same way people use the game monopoly with the get out of jail free card.

There are Biblical answers for this deception. I Corinthians 6:2 to 5 rebukes Christians for not judging.

Other scriptures tell us that we are to "Judge Righteously," and that "He who is spiritual judges ALL THINGS."

Judge not, lest ye be judged is the biggest coverup ever for Christians and non-Christians alike who don't want to deal with sin in their lives. God is not impressed with the misappropriation of this text, and neither should anyone else be who loves truth above everything.

The world often takes this verse out of context and uses it to accuse Christians of being "judgmental" when they speak of sin. In the context of the verse Jesus is telling His disciples not to judge one another, something the Bible condemns (Romans 14:10; James 4:11). In Luke 6:41,42 He speaks of seeing a speck in a brother’s eye. In John 7:24 He said, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment." If someone steals, lies, commits adultery or murder, etc., the Christian can make a (righteous) moral judgment and say that the actions were morally wrong, and that these sins will have eternal consequences. Chuck Colson said, "True tolerance is not a total lack of judgment. It’s knowing what should be tolerated—and refusing to tolerate that which shouldn’t."
