kids these days have all the means of comfort in the world ... yet our generation was happier .... and our parents generation enjoyed their lives more than us ... and so on and so forth ....

Because your memory is convenient. You remember the good, but not the bad. It is a natural survival instinct. Those who remember the bad too much go crazy. I am 53 and my life is better now than ever before.

Because your parents actually raised you instead of having a t.v. set do it while they either worked or dealt with the before and after of divorce.

Because you had the freedom to go to the end of the block around age 8 or 10, while parents these days just about have mental breakdowns when 12 and 14 year olds take two steps out of the backyard.

But, mostly, because materialism doesn't buy happiness, but today's youngsters have been raised to believe that it does.

People tend to remember happy memories longer because imprinting happier thoughts makes one feel better than banal events and unhappy memories.Right? In this light, everything that WAS seems "rosy" and better than it is currently.

I guess that's why some people are not happy with what they have. Once people realize and focus on the happier things currently in leir lives (instead of looking for untouchable greener pastures of the past or somewhere else) and be grateful for the present, then we'd have a better "world of the present."

What I'd like to say is: "Nostalgia is a grammar lesson. If we always find the past..perfect and the present...tense, then we'd likely make our future imperfect." That's why the present is a gift. Cherish every moment to find real happiness!

Any thoughts?

Materialism doesn't buy happiness, there are many examples, like the saying - "The best things in life are free".
