Why is it so negative in society to discuss black peoples historical experiences...

It's not. It's just that we find ourselves talking about this over and over in this section, the same questions about black over and over.

...and oppression? I've noticed people are afraid to discuss the experiences black people had to endure in this country. Somehow it is being imposed in our psychology that what black people experienced must be ignored or neglected because of the fear of scrutiny.

It's called backlash. I've told people time and time again that it would come. The topic of black oppression has been beaten to death (or I wish!) in the US. Not objectively either. It's done in a way that blames all of today's whites for things that some whites did to some blacks in the past. And in a way that categorizes all blacks living in the US today as victims. Most whites are tired of hearing it and living with legal discrimination against us. We'll be glad to discuss it with you when you can be objective. And I will leave you with my most vile, evil 'racist' wish for all blacks: EQUAL rights and opportunities.

It makes other people (specifically whites) feel uncomfortable. Which in all honesty it really shouldn’t. Yes it was an unfortunate and to some shameful chapter in their history but the reason why we learn/discuss slavery is to ensure history never repeats itself.

I don't think people are afraid to discuss for fear of scrutiny, I just think we all are trying to move past it. Everyone knows that in the past black people were oppressed, we don't need to keep reinforcing the racism by continuing to acknowledge it at any given moment. When will we all just move forward?

I am a history major in college so this question surfaces quite often. I do not believe it is negative. However, others may feel differently. Some people take it a bit over board. Yes slavery was a big issue for blacks for a long time, however, most are quick to blame the white, male, wealth, land owner. The truth is that slavery began a long time ago, and not just with blacks. Alexander the Great would take Macedonians that went against him and sell them into slavery. In England the lower classes were also sold into slavery. In Mexico, Mexican Indians were used as slaves before and during the mexican revolution. And really black slaves began in Africa by blacks. When one tribe would take over another, the men were often killed and the woman and children sold into slavery and brought to the U.S. that is where the white, wealthy, land owning males came into the picture. I believe that yes the history was dark and oppressed for a very long time, however blacks were not the only ones to experience this. Have you ever heard of what Mexican-Americans had to endure in this country? Probably not. Because it is blocked out more than Black history is. In every school district in the U.S. teaches Black history and celebrates Black History Month. So I do not see where you get the negativity from.

It's not. People talk about their ancestors' oppression all the time on here. I never owned a slave. I'm sorry for what my ancestors did to oppress blacks, but it's not directly my fault.

Like getitgirl said
it makes whites uncomfortable
why? because they know that alot of history that they claim as white, is in actuality black history.
and they are afraid that when blacks gain knowledge about themselves, they will see that everything we were taught in schools about whites, was a lie.
many blacks know nothing about their history, and that is exactly how whites want it to be

because you'll try to blame me for it. and you'll take something out of context and try to club me with the chip on your shoulder. I'm not just going to sit there and have the blame dumped on me. And I will talk about things many don't want to. and i'll be honest and the black girl i was talking to got all upset. You want me to sit there with my head down and agree with everything you said and have no feelings of my own. doesn't work that way. you want 2 "discuss" it thats a 2 way street. you want to rant and rave write a blog.

It isnt ignored or neglected. People whine about it all the time. It is best to look away from a painful past and set your sights on a more promising future. And most blacks are doing that. Except for the ones who want to keep negativity going and going
