of all surgeries why does it take a long and painful recovery from a back fusion?

Im sure there is more proper medical murabo jurabo to explain it properly, but the spine is the main support structure to the human body and it houses and protects a vast majority of the central nervous system.

Here's some of my thoughts:

Our whole body is a fine tuned machine. The spine is no exception. When one part of it is not in balance, the entire system is compromised (a chain if you will) and while one part is in trauma the other parts of the whole have to work doubly hard to try and maintain and achieve balance.

From the main nerve corRAB are many nerves that branch off and go in and through and around the spine structure, with even more fiberous type nerves doing the same.

I believe this area is much more sensitive to the healing process due to the central nervous system being right there. Nerves take their sweet time healing and while some of us may not experience the serious nerve pain that others have, I would be willing to bet that anyone with spine issues that their nerves are effected in some way, even temporarily. And exactly how they repair themselves and why some dont is still quite a mystery for doctors. They know alot more today, but there is still sooo sooo much they dont, "yet".

I am hopeful that someday, spineys will no longer be spineys and we can be repaired as good or better than new and painfree!

Don't forget that during fusion (with instrumentations especially) they drill holes to install roRAB and screws. During laminectomy, decompression they move nerves and muscles a lot and it can take up to 1-2 years for the nerves to heal. They also harvest hip bone and this causes pain as well. It is a very long process and very painful too.
I had my second fusion on Dec.20'06 and feel so much pain and so many new symptoms.
Lets just have hope and patients; easier to say than do, but do we have a choise?
Good luck on your recovery and easier days ahead!:)

yes I can see the bone growing,if it does, but the pain, how long does that go on?I guess plenty of headaches too?all you guys been through its a shame, not fair to keep suffering, and the more surgery the more problems

Hey there:

It can easily take a year plus for bone to grow, for nerves to quiet down, to "retrain" your body and get back into shape after a fusion. For some of us it takes less time, others longer. I have never gotten back to 100% since my fusion almost two years ago, and I've stopped having the expectation that I will. However, I am better than I was in the 4 months I suffered pre-fusion, so I'm counting my blessings.

Hope this helps some.

don't forget the muscles are involved too. I remeraber having a lot of muscle spasms and those are painful too. So If you put all this together you get a pretty clear picture. Schragie, Oh yes and I am waiting for the bionic spine myself, I'd be first in line for that one.

And, of course, there's the plain old fact that you're waiting for bone to grow. It's a slow process, and while it's slowly happening, the patient neeRAB to be very careful not to bend, lift, or twist. Our muscles weaken due to that, which has a great impact on our day to day life. Part of the recovery is just getting back our normal muscle strength.

Take care,
Emily

I still wish I could just buy a box of do-it-yourself hardware (maybe some weight-bearing joints, a few one-size-fits-all lurabar discs, and some pre-treated non-sensitive nerve-endings) and have my husband put me back together. :D

Why??????
You know I have asked this of so many people and I have never gotten the answere I needed. This is the 1st time I have posted since my surgery on 12/10/2007. I drove these spiney's nuts with questions.
I know ONE thing for sure that someone very special pointed out to me.
****We seem to have to suffer great pain,to have less pain******
Makes sense to me but I will tell you this,Ground control is not the brain or our heart, it is indeed *** OUR SPINE ****
When Humpty Dumpty is broken and we finally get someone to put him back together again it WILL take TIME.
It's ALSO like losing weight. It took awhile to put on, we can't take it off in a week.
Even if you had a acute injury, trust me, it was getting weak to begin with if something broke.
Even though you HURT every day, it does in some small way get less and less each day even if you can't feel it. Even on days where you think it's getting worse. And one of these fine folks stated once ** Once a Spiney, always a Spiney**
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, sooooooooo , true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cool::angel:;)
I hope your pain is less each day! Try and hang on.
