I have a crappy dirt bike and i am looking to buy a used motocross bike because i cant afford a new one. Why do people say its not good to buy a used dirt bike? why don't people buy it after it has been ridden hard? Is it slow after it has been ridden hard? Does it have less power or something? please tell me the disadvantages of a used dirt bike.

Buying a used mx bike is like anything else you just have to use your brains. I would not purchase one of my son training bike as I know just how much work the bike has done. The bike he actually races on would be a good bike for someone to purchase that is stepping up to an elite racing level as it is only used on race days and has been set up by one of the best mechanics in the industry.
You just have to do your homework. A bike ridden by a C grade rider is not going to have had as much work and if the person has maintained it well and has not had it for years then it should be fine. Many C grade riders upgrade yearly as well
The reason top mx riders get new bikes each season is that they do get tired and when riding at a top level loosing even a couple of seconds a lap due to the bike is just not on. A fresh bike will make the difference as to whether the rider podiums or not.
But as long as you buy carefully from someone who races then the difference in power would not be noticed by anyone who is not racing at a top level. But look into just what work the bike has done. How it has been maintained and if it was a race bike or a training bike.

I could never afford to buy new either, so dont worry about it. I think what they are saying is that you don't want to buy one that has been regularly raced. 9 times out of 10 they have been thrashed, and you could end up paying big $$$$ to fix them. Engine rebuilds can get expensive. But if you buy carefully you should not have a problem. It is better to buy a (for example) a 2005 model that has been well looked after, than say a 2007 model for the same price that has been abused. Newer is not always better. Some bikes are bought and then hardly ever ridden and are a few years old when the older decides to sell. These are the ones to buy. But dont be scared buying used, there is some great bargains to be had. Good luck.

There is nothing wrong with a used bike as long as it has not been damaged. Sometimes they get run over by cars and bent or cracks in the frame. Inspect it well and you should be fine. It also helps to know how to work on them and make adjustments/repairs yourself.

One of the reasons people like new is because they can be had very inexpensively these days.

Because a used motorcross bike has probably been beat up plenty of times on the track or in someone's backyard. You don't know what condition the bike is in and if any parts will break on you at any moment....causing you some damage on the track. Be patient and save your money for a new bike.
