Why is it helpful to have more than one gear on a bicycle? why do gears on a bicycle give the rider a mechanical advantage?

The human body is most efficient when pedaling at 70-90 rpm's. Gears allow you to stay in that range regardless of the terrain. A bicycle with only one speed will either not be able to climb hills or go very fast. A single speed bike is used mostly on level ground and is mostly designed for cruising.

Cyclist comes in all sizes, health/fitness levels

A single gear on a bicycle can only be suitable for a limited number of cyclists/routes/usage

Multiple gears or multi-speed gears can accomodates:
wider range of beginner cyclists to professional competition cyclists
variety of undulating cycling routes/off-roads/cross-country routes
variations in usage from cycling training to goods delivery

For manufacturers, it is minimal manufacturing logistics

For buyers, it is cost savings

For cyclists, it makes life more enjoyable
