My dad was trying to research and see what it is exactly that you should not put Koi in with Tropical Fish...I'm just curious as to why. And please don't say, because "it's a bad idea" or "you just shouldn't" I would really like to know the real reason for my own knowledge because fish are not my forte.
Thanks as always.

1 if ur keepin it in an aquarium they get 2big
2 their very messy fish
3 their cold water
4 tropicals are warm water

Well, I know goldfish are cold water fish.
And since goldfish and koi are the same family, they prefer the cooler water. Good luck.

Sure, I get this question often, it is a bad idea mostly because of the amount of wastes they put in the water. A koi is a fish that gets too large for most peoples fish tanks, they eat more than most fish and foul the water faster than most people can or are willing to clean up after them.
If you are willing to spend let's say about $250 on a very strong filter system and set up a tank that can hold about 250 gallons of water and do about twice the average amount of water changes and maintenance for your Koi, it most likely will work. But most people are not. Even if you are will, don't expect your Koi to grow to typical "Koi" size or to live as long as they would in a pond.
Some people do keep them in typical size tank, but you won't ever hear them say they had them live for more than a couple of years (just a baby in a Koi's life) or get passed a "toddlers" size. And if he could talk he would complain about being kept in a "crib" until his toes curled.
So be nice to your Koi and let him play and grow and give him a pond. :o)
P.S. just re-read your question....not a good idea to have any goldfish/koi in with tropical fish since the temperature will need to be catered for the tropical fish which is too warm for the Koi. The extra waste load from the Koi stresses the more fragile tropical fish. They also tend to pyschologically dominate the other fish and so it's just a bad mix overall....

Because koi require different care and water types than tropical fish. Koi are cold water fish, and can live in temps from 68-74, whereas tropical fish usually live in 75-80 temps. The difference in temperature will cause one type of fish to not live their lives as long and healthy as they would by keeping them in suitable conditions for their requirements.

Well, Koi are coldwater fish and tropical is warm water. Koi also get to about 14 inches. Koi can survive from tempuratures from 45 degrees F, to 84 degrees F. They can live with tropicals but beware, they eat different foods.
