Why is HMV so damn expensive?

Its no wonder its going under.

Everything online is cheaper. It makes you wonder what will happen to the highstreet come 20/30 years time.

I think allowing Tesco's the right to sell so much under one roof has damaged Britian's retail industry in so many ways as well.
 
they are the ONLY dvd/cd retail shop around, Virgin, Zavvi, MVT (i think that's what it was called), Woolworths, Silverscreen have all vanished within the last few years.

Whsmith is not selling any CD's and only the top 10ish chart dvRAB and apart from tesco's, asda's and sainsburys which people only really go in when shopping not technogally shopping. HMV is alone.

HMV has no competition so it can be as pricey as it likkes, because most people won't bother to go and look elsewhere (like online).
 
And you can't really compare them to online retailers based in tax havens or supermarkets which have massive economies of scale and often sell big dvd's/cd's as loss leaders.
 
A few years ago they were brilliant on prices but now they just take the p*ss , everytime i'm in their and look for a dvd and see the price i auotmatically think , i'll leave it and go to Asda,

I havent been to HMV in ages, all my DVRAB are bought online from Play.com, Amazon and Ebay. Much cheaper than buying them in shops
 
They'll sneak their prices up before Christmas so that they can bring them down again for the winter sale. Then people will think they're getting a bargain when the sale starts.
 
I don't see how HMV, or any other store for that matter can justify charging the full RRP and then some and furthermore moan at the end of the financial year that they're struggling.

I really miss Fopp, they had an amazing selection of DVD's and they were relatively cheap. How ironic that their few remaining stores were bought up by HMV. Does anyone still use Fopp are they still as cheap as they were before disaster struck - if so, how can HMV (who now own Fopp) be charging less in this store than it's own stores?
 
I like doing that too but the majority of high street shops have priced me out of being able to do so. So I shop online, as it is either that or nothing.

It would be nice to be able to support the high street but there is no excuse for some of the absolutely insane pricing in HMV, Waterstones, etc...
 
Who buys in the High Street anyway?

The comparisons I've done show that online HMV prices are usually comparable with Amazon and Play and I've bought quite a few from them as they offered the best price , but like all retailers their prices do range between titles.

over 10 years ago, all the music shops had shut in our little town, meaning i had to go to Liverpool, the nearest city, just to buy some metal albums. there were 15 quid a pop and horrendously, unneccessarily expensive. but it was something i excepted at the time.

a bit after that, i was able to then start shopping online and that ended that,

but because of the rise of CDwow and play.com - HMV had to change their prices, which they did. but they do still sell things at silly prices.

i simply popped in the other week to check out new realises, and saw the Harry Potter bluray boxset for 60 quid - but had seen it for around 20 online

and i also dont understand why instore hmv prices can be vastly different to online hmv prices.
