Why is GM getting rid of Pontiac, their most popular brand? Why not Buick?

Pontiac has a lot of history and according to a recent survey, is the GM brand consumers would least prefer to be retired. Their relatively new Solstice model is very popular. Yet it appears that it is Pontiac that GM will be retiring. Why? Why not Buick, the old clunky brand that everyone makes fun of?

Pontiac is NOT GM's biggest brand, not even close. Pontiac was their smallest and the company decided the one brand of car they could probably live without. The new redesigned Buicks and expected to sell well and Buick's continue to sell better than Pontiac, always have. Pontiac was only popular when muscle cars, their historic specialty, was popular, now that people want practical cars that look good and are fun to drive, Pontiac just can't compete

You might call it clunky and young people don't buy it much but did you know that Buick is the most dependable car in the WORLD over its lifetime.
