Why is gas so expensive?

Ive been hearing America's economy is really bad, with thousands of American's being unemployed and having to pay $3.85 a gallon here in California its not helping our pockets. What America is this here? I feel as though the "great depression" is only around the corner for a 2nd coming. Anyone else agree? Now with what I first asked . .. . I want to know why is gas soooo expensive? and why is it going higher every week?????
