I was doing research for a sociology project and found that cadillac was actually founded before ford. So i was just curious as to why Ford is credited as the first automobile when cadillac came first?

Ford had the first assembly line that mass produced one type of vehicle so that it could be sold cheap. So they get credit for that. There were many auto makers before Ford and the first internal combustion powered drivable auto mobile was built by Mercedes Benz. There were also many steam powered cars before them. Hope I have been helpful.

Henry ford invented the first production line for the auto, the mass production made them cheaper so that more people could afford them. He did not invent the car.

Karl benz invented the first car.

Good luck with you research.

Ford is credited with MASS PRODUCING the first automobile, not creating the first. There were cars before that but they were so expensive and difficult to operate that they were literally inaccessible to the average person.
