Why is figure skating sometimes not considered a sport?

I'm a figure skaters and when I tell people I'm a figure skater, I can see some of them instantly categorize it in their mind as a "not hard" or a "fake sport". It is, after all, in the Olympics. What do you guys think? I can see where people don't understand why it's not categorized as an art like ballet because it's not solely judged on any define and pre-defined rules. What I mean is, the judges can place a skater who doesn't land the all the jumps ahead of the skater who lands even harder jumps because they are more "artistic". I can understand that. But why do people who have never even tried the sport try and say it's not hard? Have they ever tried to even simply stroke around the rink a few times? What are your views on figure skating? Do you think it's a hard (and "real" because according to some it's not) sport and why.
Also, why is gymnastics without a doubt a sport, while skating is borderline? Is it because figure skates wear skirts and gymnasts don't? Does gymnastics look harder? Because the figure skating blade is 1/8 of an inch, while a beam is about 4 inches.
