Why is crossdressing accepted in children's cartoons?

As you've probably seen in many shows, cross-dressing is generally accepted in kids shows. It's more often than not used for comedy purposes.

Usually its a male character dressed as a female to swoon away some villain or adversary they're trying to get away from somewhere, but I have seen female characters dressed as males too.

Why do you think crossdressing is generally accepted in childrens cartoons, and neither network censors nor parents seem to mind?

Because in most instances, the character cross-dressing is doing it for comedy, not because they have any issues with their gender.

And yeah, Bugs Bunny's another big reason for the whole thing.

I always thought that it was because whenever it was shown on a cartoon series, it was done for comedy purposes. I forgot about how Bugs Bunney is a big reason for it as well, but he did help with that too.

You just answered your own question.

Also, cross dressing isn't a major trait of a main character, so you don't get the issues that may pop up.

Cross-dressing isn't exactly a new thing. In the old days of entertainment all female roles were played by male actors. Cross-dressing today is just a link back to those old methods. It makes children laugh because of stereotypes, and since the goal of most cartoons is comedy it gets included.

If they consistently use it to shame a character, though, that is bad.

At least its better than when a character disguises himself as a stereotypical Chinese person with the buck teeth and triangular hat. Now that's wrong.

Most cross dressing is for a comedic way of breaking into a building and getting information or fooling somebody. A mistaken identity scenario pretty much. No cartoon character is cross dressing to achieve sexual gratification.

Nail on the head. You just answered your question. When cross dressing is played strictly-for-laughs, it's perfectly acceptable. Most of the time, cartoon characters only cross dress when they want to fool someone or go in disguise. It's rarely (if ever) done because of gender confusion.

By the way, CyberCubed, can you give us any examples of cross dressing in kids' cartoons that wasn't played for comic purposes? "Cause I can't think of any.

Although crossdressing in kids' cartoons had been popularised by Bugs Bunny, men dressing a women dates back to the early days of Shakespeare, and has been a comedic tradition for centuries. So, it can be acceptable in a comedic context, as previously said.
