Why is a lot of Mythology grotesque?

A lot of mythology has very wonderful symbolism, where it is easy to understand what it means for "the real world", and also has pleasant imagery and is poetic. But a lot of it is grotesque and what I would call absurd, not pleasing at all (at least to me). Things like gods spewing out other gods, or dismembering the bodies of gods or other beings. And there is often a lot of stress on genitalia. Some of the symbolism is clear, but a lot of times, it makes very little sense to me. What is the meaning of gods in incestuous relationships, or a god masturbating things into existence, or goddesses killing themselves by hitting their genitalia (these are all actual mythological tales)? It's just kind of weird by today's standards, or at least it seems that way to me. How do minds even come up with some of this stuff?!
what's 2 girls one cup?

Human beings gave Gods the worst or most horrifying of human attributes and actions many times. That's the simplest explanation.
There is another possibility. The Gods could have really been ripping up each other into pieces and eating each other. ...and ejaculating monsters because they separate a part of their self to do it in the act.
It was a very ruff world back then as well by the way. :)

You think they're weird? 500 years from now some guy's gonna dig up 2 girls one cup and they'll think that's weird as hell. History repeats itself.
