Why in the night sky does the moon look so big from one angle but appear much

Yes, it's all trick of our mind. I take it the Moon was close to the horizon, which makes it look big to us because we expect it to look smaller. When you drive towards it, perhaps you subconsciously expect it to become bigger. But it obviously doesn't become bigger, which your brain interprets as the Moon becoming smaller.

smaller within just a few yards? From one angle the moon can look larger than normal, but then if you drive just a short distance, even what feels as if you are driving toward the moons direction, it will appear smaller? Is it just an illusion?

its an illusion which results from having a point of reference, for example if you see the moon next to a tree it will look different than if you see it in the night sky with nothing around it.
