Why HTC quick to be popular, but also quick to fall from grace?

I've been using Sony Ericsson W880i for five years, and I'd been looking for windows-based cell -phones. Even so, many commented that Windows-based cell phones are not good.

"It gets old fast," my little brother said.

Three months ago I've decided to change my cell phone and I looked into Sony Experia X10. While then, I kept looking at the trend of qwerty, touch screen, and smart phone. I've been comparing one to another. Even though X10's mediascape and timescape looks good, its OS (android 1.6) quick to become weak point.

A week ago I read a review on HTC HD2 and it surprised me, a lot, really. With so many OS develop today, I thought I wouldn't be surprised with any development anymore. It becomes a common occurence, one might say. (Windows mobile, Access Linux, Symbian, Android, Maemo, many many others, and who knows what else in the future)

I really confuse myself whether to choose between Windows-base cellphone or others.

These are what I've found:
- Many say HD2 is the main competitor of iPhone 3GS, but also say that iPhone still win on the overall
- YouTube's ads stated HD2 as a smooth and fast, but many say that TouchPro2 was also marketed with same ads (and as a result, many dissapointed-buyers resell their TouchPro2 and change it with other products)
- With my fascination of HTC for so long... why do I still get the same impression that HTC is quick to be popular, but also quick to fall from grace?
