why have my tropical fish all of a sudden started dying one by one.Ive had them

a few years.? my fish have always been well looked after and suddenly my 7 year old striped dora cat fish died with no warnings but i did notice he was swollen when we took him out. Also we have just had to put another in the hospital tank and put internal bacteria medicine in as he looks ill too. I know what the problem is but i don't know why it has happened. Could someone tell me what to do to save my other fish.
 
Ammonia and high nitrates are the biggest killer of fish in home fresh water aquariums. Amonia is the result of the fish urine over a long period of time.This problem can be overcome with changing about 1/3 of the water every 5 or 6 weeks. Bacteria and algae can be eliminated by installing an ultraviolet sterilizer.
