Why have i lost most of the grass on my garden?

Ive been living in our house for 3years,We have a bit of garden out the front,But since i cut the grass last december hardly any of the grass has grown back,I have small patches of grass,The rest of it is dried cracked mud,Is there anyway to get the grass back without buying anything?
 
Without buying anything? Uh no, afraid not my dear boy it is off to the Garden Center with you. First you need good top soil mixed into what you already have after you have mixed the top soil with your dirt then get yourself a quality grass seed depending on the amount of sun your Garden gets sow the seed into the new dirt and then pat it down firmly (walk on it) water it at least 2x a day for the first week and in a weeks time you will have a lovely lawn once again. Have fun!!!
