Why has my spam filter stopped working?

More than likely you probably signed up for a site that sold your e-mail address, or posted on a forum that displayed it. It's either that or a friend gave your e-mail to a site that did these things. I had this happen with my hotmail after I bid on a few auctions on ebay. All of a sudden my email box was flooded with spam.

In any case, keep marking the letters as spam. Eventually the spam filter will recognize the various IPs as spam & adapt. However, it's likely that no matter how good the spam filter is, spammers will always find a way to get around it. (I hate spam.)

I have had the Yahoo spam filter for some years, and it has always worked well. Now, suddenly, my in-box is being flooded with huge amounts of the old rubbish - viagra, wonder pills, etc etc. But the spam filter is still on. Does anyone know what has gone wrong?

In addition to what Tokyogirl has said, it might be that you accidentally turned the spamguard off. Check it at Options, Mail Options and Spam. That top box should be checked.

My understanding is that spam filters work on detecting specific words in email subjects. As spammers work out these words they change the subject name to allow these emails through.
I am finding now that spam I recieve is coming in under very simple subjects (as in what you would email to a friend).
We will never get rid of spam, we just have to be cautious with what we open.
My theory is if you don't know who its from, delete it!
